As the baby-boom population ages, licensed practical nurses (LPNs) will be needed to care for older patients. LPN jobs are projected to grow 12% by 2026, according to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics.
But what does a practical nurse do? As an LPN, you can provide basic nursing care under the direction of registered nurses and doctors. Practical nursing jobs can be rewarding, fulfilling, and full of positive opportunities.
If you like helping others and you want a job that’s in demand, here are a few of the reasons to consider a practical nursing career:
Working hands-on with patients
LPNs provide for the comfort of patients by helping them bathe or dress, and changing dressings. LPNs master many hands-on skills such as checking blood pressures and inserting catheters. LPNs also give many forms of medication and, depending on the state in which they work, may start intravenous (IV) fluids.
A friendly face for patients
Regardless of the size of the clinic, care center, or hospital, LPNs play an important role in caring for, comforting and showing empathy to the patients they treat. An LPN should be organized, personable and a good communicator in order to provide the proper care needed. LPNs are a comforting presence for patients and their families and often serve as a liaison between patients and the rest of the medical team.
How to Become a Licensed Practical Nurse
After completing a state-approved educational program such as the Practical Nursing program at Porter and Chester Institute, prospective LPNs need to pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN). At Porter and Chester Institute, we encourage our students to take the exams right after graduation while the skills we taught them are still fresh in their minds.
